About BuddhismBuddhism originated in Northern India over 2500 years ago. From there it spread into China, Japan, and Tibet. Today it is practised throughout the world and is one of Britain’s fastest growing religions. Like other religions it has its own teachings and practices, centred on the Buddha, his teachings or dharma, and the spiritual community or sangha. Buddhists show reverence to an ‘extraordinary being’ – Siddartha Gautama, or Buddha Shakyamuni. By practicing Buddha’s teachings, or Dharma, we protect ourself from suffering and problems, and attain enlightenment - a state of permanent inner peace
The UK communityThere are a wide variety of Buddhist organisations, monasteries, Dharma Centres, temples and more informal groups in the UK today, reflecting both the diverse ethnic groups and different schools of Buddhism found among UK Buddhists.
The local community
There are at least four Buddhist groups and centres practising regularly in Swansea. The principle Buddhist centre in Swansea is the Dharmavajra Centre in the Uplands, which is a member of the New Kadampa Tradition (NKT –IKBU). The centre was established in 1993 by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche. The centre is open to the public and exists to help people find inner peace through the practice of meditation and the application of Buddhist teachings in daily life.
