About Judaism

The Jewish community is a complex ethnic and cultural mix. The most important principle is the unity of God. Jews are commanded to love God, through practising loving kindness and ethical behaviour to all people.

The Jewish scriptures are called the Tanach or the Hebrew Bible, which include the Five Books of Moses or Torah.

The most important holy day is Shabbat, which begins every Friday eve at dusk and lasts until Saturday evening. It is a day of rest, peace and prayer.

The synagogue is not only a place of worship but also a community centre and study centre. Many Jewish religious observances also take place in the home, for family life is of central importance in Jewish culture.

The UK community

Jewish people have been living in these isles for many centuries. Today, there are established Jewish communities in all parts of the United Kingdom.

The local community

There has been a Jewish community in Swansea which was established for more than 275 years. It has existed peacefully and integrated into the local and wider general community.
