About Islam
Muslims acknowledge one God and Muhammad (peace be upon him) as his final messenger to humankind. As the “seal of the prophets”, Muhammad is understood to complete the succession of prophets which includes Abraham, Moses and Jesus. The word Islam in Arabic is derived from the word ‘salm’ meaning peace or security.Islam teaches that only by submitting one's will to God (Allah) can one attain peace in this life and the life hereafter.Islam is a complete way of life in which the Five Pillars - translated as witness, prayer, almsgiving, fasting and pilgrimage – give Muslims a structure to live by.
The UK community
Contact between the British Isles and Muslims dates back to the 8th century: King Offa of Mercia minted coins bearing the Arabic inscription ‘There is no god but God, and Muhammad is his Messenger”.
The local community
The first mosque was established by the Yemeni community in Port Tennant in the 1950s.The community demographics have changed a lot since then, with Bangladeshi people now making up the largest proportion of Swansea’s Muslims.
