About Sikhism Sikhism originated in the Punjab over 500 years ago. It is based on the teachings of ten gurus, the first of whom, Guru Nanak, emphasised the oneness of God and the importance of devotional worship, family life and service to the community. Sikhs believe in one God, the teachings of ten human gurus and the Sikh holy scriptures or Guru Granth Sahib.
The Sikh place of worship is called a gurudwara. In every gurudwara there is a langar – an open kitchen which provides free vegetarian meals, and is based on the principles of charity and fellowship. The food is eaten sitting on mats on the floor, to symbolize the denouncing of rank – everyone is equal, regardless of age, sex, caste, or creed.
The UK community There have been Sikhs in the UK for over a century; the majority arrived in the 1950s and 60s. Many Sikhs served in the British Indian armies during the First and Second World Wars.
The local community In Swansea, the focus of Sikh community life and worship is the gurudwara in Llansamlet.
